Sneak Peek

Franklin, I’m an Observer. Essentially, I’m a naughty Angel—a naughty angel with ties to Heaven. I managed to convince some of my contacts upstairs to allow a demon entry, with the condition that the knowledge he provides ends up saving human lives.”

He stared at me with those bloodshot eyes for several seconds without blinking. “Very well, let’s talk. I have information on the next major war on Earth. I can give you the details as soon as I get some type of assurance that you’re serious about getting me into Heaven.”

“Don’t insult me, Franklin.”

“What?”

“You think that a demon like you, a being who has tormented humanity for centuries, would be given access to Heaven with information on a war? I can tell you about four or five possible future conflicts just with the knowledge I gained from working at the CIA. And let’s not get into the countless number of people I’m sure you killed when you were alive. No, I need more from you.”

“How much more?”

“I’m sure you’ve had enough of this miserable existence, forever locked inside a dreadful office?” He’d contacted us because he wanted a way out of the never-ending torture and now was my time to milk him for as much information as possible. “I want to know more about what’s in that Formula you sell. I want to witness your sales trips firsthand.”

He let out a bellow of laughter. “You’re out of your mind, Observer. You’ve gone completely bonkers. Never.”

I got up from my chair and prepared to teleport out of his office. “Your loss. Thank you for your time, Franklin.”

“Wait!”

“Yes?”

The frustrated demon took in a long, deep breath, almost popping the bright red buttons of his dress shirt. “How many sales trips would you like to observe?”

My plan was working. Being stuck in an office until the end of time is enough to turn anyone into a traitor. I couldn’t envision an afterlife wasting away in stuffy rooms full of backstabbing coworkers, breathing the stale air of copy machines, and watching other people get the promotions I deserved. And if that wasn’t enough, Franklin also faced the monotonous work, soulless bureaucratic protocols, unrealistic sales goals, egotistical superiors, tasteless coffee, deadlines, stress, aniexty and everything else associated with gloomy office life.

“As many as it takes me to find out what’s in The Formula. You have nothing to lose Franklin, and everything to gain. You contacted us, so I know you want out of your current existence. I’m offering you unimaginable happiness: freedom from your miserable corporate job. Or, you can just keep meeting deadline after deadline, watching other people take credit for your work, and suffering through pointless small talk with coworkers, always and forever.” I smiled, enjoying my little diatribe and how each word made the demon wince.

“I’m sending a salesman to an Arab village called Shafa’Amr. A father and son are in need of my services. You may observe the interaction.”

Bingo. I had him.

“Great. I’m glad we could make a deal,” I said.

“Before you leave, remember one thing, Stewart. If you don’t hold up your end of the bargain, I’ll ensure that you’re trapped in this office with me—always and forever.” He emphasized the last portion of his sentence with a maniacal grin.

I did my best to pretend his words hadn’t affected me. “Don’t worry about that. Like I said, I wouldn’t risk being here and working with you if I wasn’t serious about making a deal. I’ll get you into Heaven. You just provide me with the information I want.”

Milk Carton People is a paranormal thriller about people who suddenly find themselves invisible, able to observe things but unable to participate.  Do they go mad?  Maybe they find others.  It is quite possible that there is no point in being invisible.

This is a book that plays on the very thin line of sanity and pure despair.  The characters act and react to the new challenges and the reader gets to go along for the ride.

Excerpt

I’m going to wake up, now, and go about my day with my cup of coffee. By the time I get to work, the whole thing will disappear like all dreams. I won’t even remember it.

She turned away from the little tree and took a few steps down the sidewalk. She intended to turn back toward the book store again, to somehow retake control of her destiny. As if turning back would give everyone one more chance to tell her it was all in fun and she was such a good sport.

Just then, a woman in an electric blue colored coat, walked right into her.

“Excuse, me,” Ruth began and stopped speechless. For one long, drawn out, slow motion, nightmare second, her vision was obscured by a brownish red filter which blurred everything before her. She felt hot, sticky, and confined. A cloying odor of spoiled hamburger made her gasp for clean air. She tasted copper pennies in her mouth. At the same time Ruth heard a gurgling noise and a squeak and as the whole event suddenly ended she heard a plop like pudding falling from a spoon back into the bowl.

A sudden cold sweat competed with stomach acid lurching into her throat. Ruth swallowed it back and turned to watch as the woman in electric blue continued walking down the sidewalk without breaking stride. Ruth watched the woman in the electric blue coat disappear around the corner.

“No,” Ruth said aloud with authority. “No,” she repeated louder, hoping make it all go away. “This did not happen.”

She walked to the nearest building and stood close to the cold bricks in the shadows.

I have to go home.

Guest Post:

Milk Carton People is told through the eyes and mind of Ruth.

The seed for Ruth was planted as I observed a waitress with Ruth on her nametag.  She was very nondescript, average in every sort of way.

I took Ruth home and imagined a back story for her and gave her a disability.

I gave her a back story.  As a person with a disability she lived her social life in some isolation.  Children can be very mean or busy and she was often left behind.

This isolation is probably what kept her sane as the story began to form.

I began by plopping Ruth on a park bench before work.  She nods off and when she awakens life as she knew it was forever changed.

She had become invisible and unable to interact with the physical world around her.  People walked right through her and she began to adjust.

Why was she invisible?  Was she dead?  Where was her body?  She muddled for a long time before she found others that were like her.

She left her isolation and became part of a small group of equally confused people and began to cope with the new world.

Ruth never had an easy time but she gained some strength and understanding of other people and their coping skills.

Ruth remains nondescript but she does evolve and adapt.  If she comes back in another book she will no doubt have made herself into a very memorable, capable and confident leader.

The Road to Hell: The Book of Lucifer

A novel by Christopher C. Starr

SYNOPSIS

You already know my name and, yes, I am that Lucifer.  Fall from Heaven, Garden of Eden, ruler of Hell, Satan, the Devil, the Adversary, blah blah blah.  I am the one you condemned without, what do you call it? A fair trial.  Forget what you think you know:  I want to tell my side of the story.  The Road to Hell is all about how a pathetic group of short-sighted angels kicked me out of Heaven.

Humans are naturally curious and I suspect you’re asking ‘why now?’  Well, He has a book and it’s been pretty successful, so I figured what the hell?  Found a ghostwriter and gave it a go.  After all, the story is fantastic!  It has everything you clods of dirt crave:  a love story, a little sex, intrigue.  Murder.  War.  Lots of blood.  And a cast of characters you already know and love—Michael, Gabriel, Raphael—along with a host of others.  Even has a special guest appearance by the Father and that damned boy.

So, let’s get down to business or brass tacks or whatever colloquialism works for you.  I have plenty to say and plenty of time:  The Road to Hell is just the first in a series of novels about my experience with Him, with my brothers and sisters, with you.  If you’re interested in featuring me, reach out to the pile of dust below; if not, well, I’ll see you soon.

EXCERPT

Lucifer heard me: as soon as my feet touched the glass surface of his platform, he laughed aloud and doused all the light in Heaven.

“I know why you’re here, Raphael,” Lucifer said in the darkness. “You’re afraid.”

I was afraid but I wasn’t willing to admit it. Instead I said, “Why should I be afraid? The Father is with me.”

“You sure about that?” And I could see Lucifer’s teeth glinting in the light wafting from my body. He was smiling. “You think he’ll still back you up now that you’re failing him?”

His face was the color of fire, deep and red, and a haze made him seem like a mirage. Even in the darkness, in the heat of his rage, Lucifer was still beautiful. His thin face, the angular cheekbones, his wide, open eyes, his halo of shimmering hair—all presented a portrait of absolute perfection. Even in this dark hour, I envied the crude formation of my own round face, my pudgy nose, the softness of my jawline.

I tried to sound as sure of myself, as certain as he was but my voice cracked, “I’m not failing—”

He pounced on me, laid long, thin fingers on my shoulders, pushed that gleaming grin into my face. “Sure you are! Why else would you be here, Peace Keeper? Angels are dead, Raphael. It’s slipping through your fingers. Sounds like failure to me.”

“This is your doing!” I pressed him back.

“Raphael, you insult me; finger pointing seems so…beneath you. Besides, I’m bound, remember?” He fondled the chains streaming from his wrists and ankles, smiled at me again. “You chained me up so I couldn’t cause any problems for the others. Weren’t those your words?”

He was right. And I hated him for it. “Yes,” was all I said.

“So you failed them or you failed him. Either way, you’re a failure, kiddo.”

“I want to talk about what we do next.”

He was walking around me now. I could hear the chains scraping the surface of the glass.

“And I want to talk about your fears,” he said and his voice sounded like velvet in my ears.

“This doesn’t help us, Lucifer. It doesn’t help us end this nonsense. ”

“Maybe I don’t want to end it. Maybe this is exactly what we need.”  He got louder, bolder. Closer. “Does that scare you, Raphael, that you won’t be able to keep it together? Is that why you tremble in the darkness? Because when it’s just you and the Father and all the light and noise is gone, you know you’re going to have to tell him you failed?”

He had me. I understood in that moment how Lucifer could enflame the deepest of emotions. His words touched the very root of me; spoke directly to the futility flexing in my palms. It was out of my hands—I knew that much. Lucifer knew it too. By virtue of the fact that I was there, standing before him while he taunted me, it was out of my hands.

I tried to turn it back on him, “What about your fears? What about what you’re afraid of?”

“I’m scared,” he whispered, “that the Father won’t want me back once I’m finished.” The smile was gone.

ABOUT ME

Christopher C. Starr is the author of The Road to Hell: The Book of Lucifer, the first novel in the Heaven Falls series. These stories examine the God’s relationship with Heaven and Earth, told through the eyes of the angels. The next book in the series, Come Hell or Highwater, is scheduled for late 2012/early 2013.

Chris makes it a point to look at the dark side of his characters, both heroes and villains, and his work explores the “grey”—that place where good and evil come together in all of us.

When he’s not being chased out of churches, Chris enjoys comic books and movies, staying away from cemeteries, and poorly participating in P90X. He lives in Seattle with his wife, two kids (The Boy and the Honey Badger), and his huskies, Rocky the Wonder Dog and his colorful sidekick, Leylah Redd. Review: The Rising Moon

The Rising Moon
The Rising Moon by Nilsa Rodriguez
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It’s amazing how quickly your life can change.

Lia is a quiet girl. She keeps to herself, pushing people away because she’s cursed to lose everyone she loves. Until she meets Ryan and he refuses to be pushed away. Together, they try to figure out the mystery surrounding Lia and her curse and uncover a lot more hiding in the shadows than Lia ever expected.

As Lia finds out more about herself and her background, she almost blindly accepts the new pieces of her world, though she is given a lot of hard evidence. Ryan was a very interesting character that played a big part in the novel at the beginning but almost faded out towards the end when other characters were introduced. The lack of emotional depth hindered the story, though that could be fixed along with the grammatical errors.

While the idea and concept behind the story was very interesting, the telling of it needed a little polish. There were points that seemed to contradict themselves or were just confusing. There was not a good enough line drawn between Lia’s nature and that of those around her — the reader is told she’s a shifter and an immortal werewolf, but the two don’t sound like they could be the same. The love angle seemed forced, though the idea that a werewolf would love a vampire is interesting.

The Rising Moon is a dark, twisted take on tales of shifters, werewolves, and vampires. While the ethnic side could have been more enriching, the story’s potential drove it forward until the final battle.
