Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Eleven

The Why:

I’ve decided that I wanted to do something nice for the authors that have given me paperback review copies or have let me edit their work. So, in the hopes of getting them some more exposure and reviews, I’ve come up with a “Twelve Days of Christmas” giveaway. Every day until Christmas, I’ll be giving one paperback that I’ve reviewed &/or worked on. I do ask that you consider reviewing the book that you win, as this can always help the author and future readers!

The Book:

SecretsFrontToday’s book is Secrets of a Universe by H. Brian Rawson. It turns out I probably interacted with Rawson when I was a teenager and didn’t even know it. Luckily for me, he ran into a mutual friend and we got in contact. I worked really hard on this book and I think it has a lot of potential! There is action, adventure, romance, “other” beings, and loveable characters all driving this book. I’m really looking forward to some reviews on this one!

Blurb:

Krystal Taylor has been under the military’s thumb since birth. Her power of astral projection requires it — without daily Mindkey treatments, she will die a horrible death. She wants freedom from her leash, the freedom to let her flesh and blood, not just her mind, experience the world.

While on an unauthorized hiking expedition, designed to give her some space from her spying duties and the hundreds of government agents and prying scientists who keep her alive, she is captured by a band of terrorists, threatening much more than her life. Unless Dan Parker, the director of the Mindkey Project, and Dr. George Larkin, its key scientist, can reach her in time, the entire planet may fall into the clutches of the worst terrorist mankind has ever produced.

From the farthest reaches of outer space to the inner depths of the planet Earth, every soul — dead or alive — waits, unknowingly, for Krystal to be found — or turned into a weapon.

The Book:

Path of Needles CoverToday’s book is Path of Needles by Hannah Kollef. I had the pleasure of working with Hannah on this book! While I don’t have a review, I do have a special guest post that Hannah did on the background idea of her Path series. Keep your eyes open for book two as well!

Blurb:

When 17-year-old Kat Finnegan is warned in a Brooklyn alleyway that her father is going to disappear, she shrugs and walks away. The next morning her father is gone–leaving behind a booby-trapped apartment and a mystery that has slept for a thousand years.

To get him back, Kat and her twin brother Roger will have to unravel the secrets behind the Rose Queen–the fairy queen who ripped apart reality and stitched it back together, transforming the Fey into the memories known as fairy tales. They will also have to come to grips with their emerging powers and discover why they are known to the magical world as “The Truth” and “The Lie.”

Hunted by demons and treacherous Fey, Kat and Roger follow the Queen’s trail from Manhattan to Newark. But neither the Queen nor her curse is what they expected, and more is at stake than their father’s life–and theirs.

Path of Needles is the explosive first book in the Paths series: urban fantasies littered with deadly fairy tales, tangled romance, and heartbreaking betrayals. Continue reading Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Nine

The Book:

Golden ChariotToday’s book is Golden Chariot by Chris Karlsen. Charlotte feels the pull of Hektor as if he were speaking to her, begging her to prove his existence. From this feeling comes an obsession (though she wouldn’t call it that) with the Trojan War and her research topic. Hoping to find evidence to support her theory, she embarks on the archeological recovery of a ship from that time period off the coast of Turkey. However, the agent assigned to guard the sight is murdered and the replacement agent, Atakan, must find his killer — even if it is Charlotte.

I’d recently participated in the blog tour for this book and was lucky enough to get a paperback review copy. It is well written and exciting, especially if you like mythology, diving, or murder mystery. Check out my review and enter below to win!

The Book:

PurgatoryToday’s book is Purgatory by Tomás Eloy Martínez. Emilia has spent the last 30 years of her life looking for her husband, Simón, who had disappeared while on a trip to map obscure Argentinean country. When she finds him, he is exactly the same as the day he vanished, yet she is changed – older, more worn – and she questions if he would still love her, and if she’s in her right mind.

You’ve probably noticed that we’ve moved away from the light, younger-audience books and have delved into material with a little more depth. This isn’t your typical ghost story, nor is it the “paranormal” of recent. Check out my review before entering!

The Book:

AshesToday’s book is Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick.  After being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, Alex leaves on a hiking trip to deal with her personal demons and say good-bye to her parents. That’s when it happens: the pulse. Electronic devices no longer work and folks are either dead or have a strange craving for flesh. Set on survival, Alex does what she must to avoid the Changed and save her improvised family.

I believe this is the first in her trilogy and that book two is already out. It was a quick read, as you can see from my review, but I have yet to read the second book.
