In the annals of dysfunctional families, the Chisholm’s are working their way to the top. Drug abuse, an unwed mother with multiple fathers, and the questionable cash flow for the ‘pretty one’. All this from a seemingly normal, two parent middle class family. But were the choices truly made of their free will?

Bad choices are a Chisholm family trait, one that confounds the youngest child, Ellie, who’s trying to separate herself by making smart decisions. And falling for Oscar Jeffreys, the hottest guy at school, would be number one on the list of Chisholm family disasters. Yet the crazy part is it’s not a one sided attraction. Somehow Ellie has caught Oscar Jeffreys’ eye. Sure she could see the barriers between them. Race, age, popularity. They were at opposite ends of the spectrum. But a demon set to destroy her family? She can’t see that.

Oscar provides security and acceptance Ellie never imagined she deserved. As the passion of first love grows, Ellie honestly believes she has a chance to beat the odds and live a happy, normal life. Then her world collapses around her. With the help of a guardian angel, Ellie learns of a world that has unknowingly surrounded her for years. And she’ll have to find strength buried deep inside to save not only her future, but flush out and stop the demon in her midst.

And Ellie will have to learn that sometimes the hardest lesson about growing up is accepting that you’re worth more. Continue reading CBLS Blog Tour: The Chrysalis Series

Book Description:

Dorian Lake has spent years cornering the Baltimore hex-crafting market, using his skills at the hermetic arts to exact karmic justice for those whom the system has failed. He keeps his magic clean and free of soul-corrupting Netherwork, thus avoiding both the karmic blow-back of his practice and the notice of the Presidium, a powerful cabal of practitioners that polices the esoteric arts in America. However, when an unscrupulous Netherworker interferes with both his business and his personal life, Dorian’s disarming charisma and hermetic savvy may not be enough to keep his soul out of jeopardy.

His rival, a soul monger named Neil Osterhaus, wouldn’t be such a problem were it not for Carmen, Dorian’s captivating ex-lover. After two years’ absence Carmen arrives at Dorian’s doorstep with a problem: she sold her soul to Osterhaus, and has only two weeks to buy it back. Hoping to win back Carmen’s affections, Dorian must find a replacement soul without tainting his own. As Dorian descends into the shadows of Baltimore’s underworld, he must decide how low he is willing to stoop in order to save Carmen from eternal damnation… with the Presidium watching, waiting for him to cross the line. Review: Serenya’s Song

Serenya's Song
Serenya’s Song by Mysti Parker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I doubted heaven was within my reach until now, when two similar souls could make such beautiful music together and send my spirit soaring into the sky.

Serenya has the ability to interpret dreams and a birth defect that forces her to wear gloves. She’s endured small-town gossip and the cruelty of her husband, Sebastian, The Earl of Summerwind, but when Jayden comes to town, her world is turned upside down.

Having met Jayden in A Ranger’s Tale, readers will know some of his back story and why he is new to Summerwind. Serenya’s past (and present) is a tragic story, made worse when her tragic love is found in Jayden. What follows is a tale full of twists, inner turmoil, love, and lose befitting something out of Shakespear.

Love, adventure, a beautiful setting, strong characters–all reasons to pick up both Tallenmere books. The flowing language keeps reader’s attention, speeding this fantasy/romance towards it’s inevitable yet unpredictable conclusion.

Review: A Ranger’s Tale

A Ranger's Tale
A Ranger’s Tale by Mysti Parker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’d been through hell and back and thought I’d took up permanent residence there until I had Cali in my arms again.

Caliphany has an easy, if predictable, life as the King’s niece. As the daughter of Sirius, Leogard’s most famous wizard, she’s forced into following his footsteps and finds that it doesn’t suit her at all, and neither does her arranged marriage. She daydreams of adventure and is almost kidnapped. Fortunately, Galadin comes to her rescue, and the two of them strike a bargain–Galadin will train Cali to be a ranger.

What follows is a tale of adventure, of love, and of being true to yourself. Cali and Galadin are fleshed-out characters, each with their own flaws and ideas. The pain they feel is real. The hardships they face, separate and together, shape them in a way nothing else could.

The adventure is lively, filled with twists and turns and trials along the way. Just when readers think they know what will happen, some other choice comes along. Though in the end, love prevails.

The way everything comes together is a triumph of the author. Full of emotion, both grief and love, and adventure, A Ranger’s Tale is not to be missed for lovers of fantasy/romance. Do NOT judge this book by it’s cover–you WILL miss out.

Review: The Vampire’s Hope

The Vampire's Hope
The Vampire’s Hope by Danica Winters
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Death was getting more interesting by the second.

Ellie wanders into The Raven a human dancer looking for a job, but emerges a newly turned vampire. Hidden within the tunnels of her new home, the Keres Den, she discovers secrets and something she’s not thought she could anymore — feelings.

The main character, Ellie, is emotionally shut off, both to herself and readers of her story. She starts to feel again, using her vampire power of hope, with the help of Ian, the striking Viking. The action takes place quickly (it is a short read, mind), with Ellie taking to the vampire way of life rather quickly, including calling humans “blood buckets” without even hearing the term before.

In the end, The Vampire’s Hope shows that hope (and love) is a beautiful thing, and leaves Ellie to pick up the pieces of her new life.
